Welcome to Tan Aiki Dojo

Aikido is not primarily a system of combat, but rather a means of self-improvement and self-defense.

Aikido has no tournaments, competitions, or contests. All aikido techniques are learned at the pace of the individual student. According to the founder, Morehei Ieshiba, the goal of aikido is not the defeat of others, but the defeat of the negative characteristics which inhabit ones own mind and inhibit it's functioning.

At Tan Aiki Dojo

  • We train to become better people from within, recognizing that we are our own worst enemy.

  • We train for enlightenment and self-defense, not to beat up our attackers.

  • We train to neutralize aggressive behavior by developing and utilizing verbal and non-verbal communication skills. However, we keep in mind that not everyone can be reasoned with, and we learn to apply pressure to various portions of the human anatomy in the hopes of remaining safe in the midst of an attack.

  • We recognize that aggression and violence is all around us in today's society. It is in our homes, our schools, our work places, and can even be found on our vacations.

Learning to deal with aggressive and violent behaviors is extremely important because meeting aggression with aggression will only breed trouble. Peace is our focal point and harmony is our intention.

May your time here be enlightening, may your skills develop and exceed your expectations, and may you overflow with the essence of Aiki.

Sincerely,

Michael Tan, Shihan
